Don’t lose your domain. Transfer it where it suits you best

The fear of losing the domain, after so much searching and after building an identity around it, is far more common than one might think.

You bought the domain, you’re happy with the name but your provider costs are too high and you risk not being able to keep it anymore.

The fear of losing the domain, after so much searching and after building an identity around it, is far more common than you think.

We could compare a domain name to your phone number. All our contacts know our phone number and have saved our name in their address book, but what would happen if the number had to change?
We would be forced to look up our friends, relatives, colleagues and tell them the new phone number, with the risk of losing valuable contacts, as well as creating some significant difficulties.

The same thing could happen with your domain name, but with the difference that it’s hard to tell everyone about the new change, and it will surely cause major inconvenience for anyone who types the old domain.

The site may not load or may show a completely different one.
Any emails sent to the old addresses may bounce back because they can no longer find the recipient.

And all of this will reflect on your business image, causing no small damage.

Luckily, all providers can supply a transfer code, called an Authcode, which identifies the domain and allows you to authorize the migration from one provider to another.

This way you can move the domain to other services, while keeping the same name.

How does the transfer work?

Each domain has very specific rules that define how it can be migrated.

These are very often regulated by the extension associated with the domain name, which follows the rules set by the NIC (Network Information Center).

For example, extensions like .com, .org, .net, which are part of the generic type (gTLD), to be transferred require that at least 60 days have passed since activation or since data updates, such as nameservers or registrant details.

Extensions belonging to a country (ccTLD), like .it, .co.uk, .de, .fr, .us, can be transferred even before the 60 days have passed.

How do I transfer my domain?

In most cases, to authorize the migration you need to obtain the transfer code, or Authcode.

This is provided, by law, by the provider, which cannot refuse to release it, unless there are outstanding debts or different agreements between the parties.

Usually the authcode can be retrieved from your registration panel, or you can request—via a button, still from the panel—the sending of an email with the migration code.

Providers such as GoDaddy, Aruba, Register, Ovh, Flazio Domains and many others release the transfer code freely, allowing the user to obtain it at any time by logging into their account and opening the domain tab.

Once you have the transfer code, just choose the new provider you want to use and follow the steps to register the domain.

By entering your .it domain, for example, on Flazio Domains, the system will detect that it is already taken.
Using the Transfer button you can enter the transfer code and complete the registration process.

Transfer times can range from a minimum of 3 days up to 8 days, during which the two providers will communicate to start the migration procedure.

Always remember to make an email backup, to avoid losing correspondence.
